Do You Actually Need Supplements? A Simple Guide

Walk into any health store and it’s… a lot.
Magnesium. Vitamin D. Greens powders. Electrolytes. Adaptogens. Everyone seems to be taking something.
So it’s a fair question:
Do you actually need supplements?
The short answer? Sometimes. But not always in the way you think.
Supplements Aren’t the Foundation
It’s easy to think supplements are the missing piece.
But most of the time, they’re not the starting point, they’re the support.
Your body still relies on the basics:
Eating regularly
Getting enough protein + nutrients
Moving your body
Sleeping (or at least trying to 😅)
Managing stress
If those things are off, supplements can only do so much.
When Supplements Can Be Helpful
This is where they actually make sense.

1. When you’re depleted
Some nutrients are just harder to get enough of.
Common ones I see:
Magnesium → stress, muscle tension, sleep
Vitamin D → especially in Vancouver or Burnaby with limited sun
Electrolytes → if you’re active, sweating or always feeling drained
In these cases, supplements can help fill a gap.
2. When your body is under more stress
Busy schedules, training, poor sleep, mental load, it all adds up.
Your system burns through resources faster, which can leave you feeling:
More fatigued
More tight or sore
Slower to recover
Sometimes a supplement can help support you through that season.
3. When you’re working on something specific
This could be:
Sleep
Muscle recovery
Energy levels
Digestion
The key here is targeted support, not just taking a little bit of everything.

When Supplements Probably Won’t Help (Much)
This is the part people don’t always hear.
Supplements won’t fix:
Constant high stress with no recovery
Sitting all day without movement
Poor sleep habits
Skipping meals or under-eating
You might feel a small difference, but it usually doesn’t last because the root issue is still there.
A Simple Way to Think About It
Instead of asking: “What supplement should I take?”
Try asking: “What is my body missing right now?”
Am I under-fuelled?
Am I overstressed?
Am I not recovering?
Am I low in something specific?
That answer will guide you way better than trends ever will.
What I Usually Recommend to Patients
I keep it pretty simple:
Start with the basics first
Add 1–2 targeted supplements max (not 10)
Give it time to see if it actually helps
Adjust based on how your body responds
More isn’t always better.
Where Chiropractic Care Fits In
This is something people don’t always connect.
Even with the “right” supplements, if your body is:
Constantly tense
Not moving well
Stuck in that “go mode” state
…it’s harder to actually feel the benefits.
Care can help:
Reduce physical tension
Improve movement and breathing
Support your nervous system
So your body is in a better place to use what you’re giving it.
The Bottom Line
You don’t need a cabinet full of supplements to feel better.
In most cases a few targeted supports paired with simple daily habits will take you a lot further than chasing the latest trend.
If you’ve been wondering what you actually need, this is something we can always talk through together, because it’s never one-size-fits-all.
